The little Magby simply watched as the Dedenne was put into the Pokeball, its eyes wide with curiosity. She blinked, cocking her head to the side as Jolene spoke to her. +I wanna go in there.+ She pointed at her bag repeatedly. She stood on her tiptoes and tugged on Jo's pant leg, whimpering and pointing at the bag. She knew that sometimes people kept Pokemon with them. She wanted to go with Jolene, and she wanted to go into one of the red and white balls.
Hopefully the trainer would consider taking her with her. She held her arms up helplessly, staring up at Jolene with this big eyes. Her momma was gone, yes, but she was almost old enough to leave on her own anyways. Magmortars didn't exactly coddle their young after a certain age. Maybe this pretty human would take her on some sort of adventure. If not, she would probably just keep hanging out on the lava rock and soaking up the sun. Magby wants to join you!

Jolene stared down at the Magby and sighed as it tugged at her bag, whimpering and motioning suggestively toward the Pokeballs. It seemed she wanted to be captured, too ... but Jolene was conflicted. Did this little Pokemon really understand what she was getting herself into? There would be battles along the way. She would probably get hurt. But, for some reason, the idea of leaving her here didn't sit well with Jo either.
"...Alright, you can stay with me for a while." She nodded. This way it was nothing binding. If the little Magby changed her mind later on, the woman could let her go. It seemed to make sense... to her, at least.
With another nod, she pulled out a Pokeball and pressed the button, watching as the Magby was drawn in. Then she considered what to do next - find more Pokemon here, or move on? Eventually she decided upon the former, but even as she thought, her legs and feet had been moving as if with minds of their own. Without even realizing it, she'd made her way to the edge of the island, right next to Umbil Lake and the volcano.

Where the water lapped at the volcanic rock, a small Mudkip emerged from the water. Some sort of green root was in his mouth, and he walked delicately up the rocky outcrop to a flat area. There, another wet root was already waiting for him. He plopped down beside it and dropped the other root on his other side. A few moments passed where he simple lay on his tummy, eyes closed. After a while, he turned his head to stare at Jolene. His dark eyes narrowing, he snuggled in closer between his two roots, watching her suspiciously.
He didn't know it, but these roots were a special sort of herb that could revive a fainted Pokemon, a Revival Herb. Unfortunately, he just really loved the way they smelled and enjoyed sitting with them. He'd never bothered actually eating one. He sniffed the air, still suspicious of the human, before closing his eyes once more and breathing softly.

Stopping at the lake's edge, Jolene sighed happily as she took in the view. It was quite beautiful here - beautiful and full of scientific discoveries just waiting to be made.
Her reverie was interrupted when she felt herself being watched. She turned to see the Mudkip, peering at her curiously and somewhat suspiciously - it seemed to have made a 'nest' from a pair of grassy plants. The woman tilted her head and eyed the plants more closely, but she was no botanist - she had no idea what they were. Perhaps something like catnip? ...Mudkip-nip?
Whatever that stuff was, the Mudkip seemed quite defensive of it. Jolene approached carefully, with Denny close behind.
"...Hello. Don't worry. We're not here to steal your ... herbs."
<Oh, right! Herbs!> Something clicked in Denny's mind. <They're Revival Herbs!>
...too bad Jolene couldn't understand him. The Mudkip could, though, so he decided to just address the other Pokemon.
<Yeah, those things can revive fainted Pokemon - pretty useful to trainers. Having 'em there is kind of asking for trouble. Just, you know. A friendly warning.>

Those slitted eyes opened wide as Jolene approached the water-type. He snuggled in closer to his precious herbs, eying her spitefully. When he noticed Denny, he scooped both towards his chest with his small arms, and leaned his head sideways over them, staring at the Dedenne. When Jolene leaned down, he turned his attention to her, wiggling away a bit.
He stared at Denny as the small Pokemon spoke. When Denny had finished, he stood up and stepped in front of the Revival Herbs, lifting his chin defiantly. +Friendly, huh? You sure you don't want my greens?+ He narrowed his eyes again, puffing out his small chest in an attempt to seem much bigger than he actually was. Unfortunately, he wasn't much bigger than Denny at all. His "greens" were very important to him, you see. Why they were important... Well, he probably couldn't tell you that much, but the herbs were his favorite color and he wanted to be around them in an almost pathetic way.

Denny smirked at the Mudkip, who was almost completely single-minded in his obsession with his 'greens'. It was really almost disturbing. But honestly, he neither knew nor cared about how to break the Water-type's 'addiction'.
<I really mean it, man. I'm not here to mess with your stash.> He chuckled softly. <But I'm not kidding either. You should hide those, or some trainer will come start a fight for 'em.> He glanced over his shoulder at Jolene, who was still watching, bemused. <...she doesn't count.>
But then Jolene suddenly spoke up. "You must really like those plants..." She tried not to chuckle at the idea of a future Water/Ground type being so enamored with grass. "You know, there must be more than two out there... I could help you find more?"
Denny blinked. What did she mean...? Did she really want to catch this Mudkip? He didn't seem entirely ... stable.

Denny chuckled at the naive Water-type. He was almost cute, really. The little Mudkip didn't seem to understand why anyone wouldn't want Revival Herbs. <Well, like I said - they're for fainted Pokemon. And good trainers don't let their Pokemon faint - so good trainers don't need 'em. See?> It briefly crossed his mind that he was being overgenerous to Jolene by calling her a good trainer - she hadn't really proven herself yet - but of course he didn't voice that thought.
Good trainer or not, the woman was clever if nothing else - she'd noticed that the Mudkip couldn't really handle many of those herbs. "We can help you find more and give you a better place to store them," she said, quickly amending her earlier offer. And to show what she meant, she opened up her rather spacious bag. "See? Much better than holding them in your mouth or paws."
Meanwhile the Dedenne just rolled his eyes ... diplomacy was all well and good, but at the moment he'd have honestly preferred a good fight.
