Lunita Island is the go-to vacation spot for Decona natives. It is technically not within the Decona region, and is instead considered to be a territory of the region. As such, there are a great deal of cultural differences between mainlanders and islanders, and island natives take great pride in being Lunitian – not Deconian.
For Lunitians, the moon and tides are highly important. Many pray to Cresselia and believe that she hears, and even that she visits the island on holidays and during big festivals to bring good tidings. Clefairy are very popular and considered to be descended from Cresselia, so natives believe they are good luck; because they are so common on the island, most natives will have at least one Cleffa or Clefairy. Other fairy Pokemon are treated with similar esteem.
Nature is also very significant to Lunitians. There is a great deal of rain on Lunita Island, so the plant life is lush and green. Anywhere you turn, you’ll be face-to-face with a huge gnarled white-bark tree draped with green leaves, a towering palm tree, or a colorful flower bush. Beautifly, Butterfree, Beedrill, and Combee are frequent sights as they flutter about pollinating the plants. Flabebe perch atop their individual flowers as they sway in the breeze. Wild Pokemon live in the forests, flourishing in such a healthy environment. Tourists frequently visit to see the beautiful plants, exciting fauna, and beautiful pink sand beaches, and the natives strive to preserve their island and coexist with nature instead of tearing it down. The central city on the island, Harrison City, is decorated throughout with plants and surrounded by forest, and buildings on the island are not allowed to be taller than five stories, so no skyscrapers mar the skyline. Outside the cities, there are small villages scattered about, and tiny homes here and there, hidden from view by trees and connected to the cities and villages only by a series of roads which pass through the forest. The most common mode of transportation is bicycle or scooter, since the roads are very narrow and curving as they wind around the flora and up hills, making them perilous for inexperienced drivers and large vehicles.
Though well water is commonly used for bathing on the island, rainwater is the primary source of drinking water. Most buildings on the island have beautiful white limestone roofs, and the limestone purifies rainwater as it pours, making the water drinkable. The white roofs are complemented by colorful paints which decorate buildings, and these colors make even the buildings look like part of the tropical wilderness. Clay and limestone sculptures are popularly used to decorate homes or towns.
Tourism is the central industry of Lunita, and so many activities are available for visitors to the island. In the villages along the coastline, boats and jet skis are harbored at small dockyards, and cruise ships make stops at the largest dockyard on the island, which is nestled up against Harrison City. The boats are captained by natives who offer parasailing, snorkeling, diving, tubing, and glass-bottom tours of the clear waters full of colorful water-type Pokemon. There are many restaurants specializing in rum drinks and spicy, delicious seafood, and for those who simply want to visit the beach, buses frequently go to and from the dockyards and the popular beaches. Hikes and trail rides are offered for the more outdoorsy types who would rather stay on land. In the cities, too, are a number of more urban choices. Casinos are very popular with the tourists, and there are a number of all-inclusive resorts for those looking to relax. Bars, clubs, and pubs are also hotspots. And, of course, souvenir shops full of moon-themed souvenirs are common sights.
For trainers, there aren’t a great many activities available. Folks who come to Lunita are typically looking for a getaway from work, and this also applies to trainers! However, there are resorts which cater exclusively to Pokemon and their trainers, and these facilities offer both opportunities to relax and gym areas where trainers may take their Pokemon for a workout. There are also a number of caves on the island which, if you walk off the beaten path, house a number of wild Pokemon. The caverns are beautiful and filled with crystals, stalagmites, stalactites, and underground lakes, but the Pokemon there will not take kindly to visitors if you have wander away from the areas designated as safe by the guides in the caves.
Once per month, lunar festivals are held in celebration of the full moon. These celebrations spread into the streets of cities and towns; buildings will be decorated by colorful paper lanterns of every shape and size, vendors will line the roads and sell Cresselia memorabilia, food, or hand-crafted knickknacks, and street performers and musicians will be entertaining pedestrians in hope of a tip or two. On these nights, pubs and clubs are typically overflowing, but there is no better night to visit the beach and see the full moon hanging over the ocean.
Lunitians speak Common English, just as those on the mainland do. Many have a Lunitian accent, however, and a Lunitian accent is a very strange thing indeed. It is difficult to pin down and describe, but the best approximation is a combination of a Jamaican and a posh British accent. Some natives may have no accent at all, and some may have a very thick accent making them nearly incomprehensible to outsiders.
OTHER TIDBITS:
- Reggae and electronic music are very popular among Lunitians. These are what will most often be heard playing in stores or from the radios on passing scooters.
- Because it is arguably the best vacation spot available to those in the Decona region, it is common to run in to famous faces in some of the more popular pubs, clubs, and resorts.
- Though the whole of Decona is rather warm year-round, in Lunita this is especially true. In the summer, it can reach upwards of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, although 80 to 90 degrees is more common. In the winter, it is almost unheard of for the temperature to fall past 55 degrees Fahrenheit, except perhaps at late night in February. As such, the more moderate and comfortable winter months are when most crops are planted, because it is simply too hot for crops to grow in the summer.
